The Hoi An property that raised the bar for conscious luxury
I have a confession to make.
In over a decade of traveling and staying at hundreds of hotels, Airbnbs, and retreat centres worldwide, I’ve never walked out of a property thinking “this is perfect, I wouldn’t change a thing.”
My experience in luxury hospitality, from my first internship in the press office of the Baglioni Hotels Milan headquarters to working with Four Seasons and other luxurious properties, has given me what some might call an obsessive eye for detail. Give me five minutes in any room and I’ll spot the tiny improvements that could transform a guest’s experience.
That’s why my visit to Namia River Retreat in Hoi An, Vietnam this past May left me so stunned.
For the first time in my life, I found myself speechless.
After spending over an hour exploring the property and talking with Dien, their Director of Sales, I walked away with just one thought: “This is the most beautiful, unique and well-designed property I have ever visited.”
Four months later, that feeling hasn’t faded.

Where Every Detail Tells a Story
My visit began with a delicious fresh-made juice as breakfast service was in full swing, and I found myself mesmerised by one of the most impressive hotel buffet I’ve ever encountered.
Between trays of mouth-watering food, small signs caught my eye next to local products: artisanal nuts, granola from a nearby producer, pastries prepared by a local baker. And yes, there was even a coffee roasting machine, because of course there was.
This attention to supporting local artisans isn’t a marketing move, it’s woven into the way Namia operates. They could easily have their chefs create everything in-house, but instead they choose to champion other local Vietnamese businesses, creating a network of authentic experiences that extends far beyond the resort’s borders.
Dien walked me through the property.
We explored the mainland restaurant with sweeping river views, and the island’s more intimate all-day dining venue reserved for resort guests.
When we reached the accommodations and she opened the door, I found myself saying “this is stunning” at every turn.
Each room felt like a private sanctuary, with its own pool and carefully curated details: from the sunken bathtubs that staff prepare with traditional herbs to the complimentary non-alcoholic mini-bars refreshed daily, plus the bamboo bicycles that come with every villa.

Just before leaving the room she showed me something that really cemented my impression: a copy of Peace is Every Step by Thich Nhat Hanh, the beloved Vietnamese Zen master whose teachings on mindfulness have touched millions worldwide. This book sits in every room, and it’s such a simple gesture that perfectly encapsulates Namia’s approach: luxury that nourishes the soul, not just the senses.
We then explored their wellness centre which features eight herbal steam rooms, ten treatment rooms, and two traditional apothecaries where guests receive personalised herbal preparations.
The yoga spaces also deserve special mention.
The indoor studio is thoughtfully designed with floor-to-ceiling windows.
The outdoor meditation area sits directly on the river’s edge, where the sound of flowing water becomes part of the practice.
Namia offers a comprehensive schedule including Yang yoga flows, evening sleep yoga sessions, and their signature morning practice, Dưỡng Sinh, a traditional Vietnamese breathing and movement exercise similar to Tai Chi, popularized by historian Nguyễn Khắc Viện.
The integration of Vietnamese mindfulness traditions makes the practice here genuinely distinctive.
A Philosophy Rooted in Vietnamese Soul
What struck me most about Namia wasn’t just the impeccable facilities, it’s the philosophy of the place that truly inspired me.
The resort’s founder, Nam, grew up in a Northern Vietnamese village along the Day River, where his childhood was filled with walks through rice fields and afternoons swimming with friends. His grandmother’s herbal remedies: steaming pots filled with guava, bamboo, lemongrass, and mugwort leaves form the foundation of Namia’s wellness philosophy today.
This isn’t superficial theming.
This is a Vietnamese founder sharing the healing traditions that raised him, elevated through modern luxury hospitality.
Nam’s vision was to create a space where international service standards meet deeply authentic Vietnamese cultural experiences, and the result feels both revolutionary and timeless.
Experiences That Transform
What makes Namia’s cultural immersion so profound is how these experiences connect people to living traditions.

The morning silent walking meditation, inspired directly by Thich Nhat Hanh’s teachings, begins at 7:30am by the pool and flows naturally into the day’s rhythm.
There’s Vietnamese Tai Chi at dawn, blessing tree ceremonies mid-morning, and basket boat paddling.
Morning bamboo bicycle trails wind through village paths where you witness daily life that contrasts beautifully with the resort’s serene atmosphere.
The daily lantern lighting ritual at sunset is rooted in Hoi An’s ancient practice of gratitude and making wishes for the future. Evening cultural cruises on the private boat become floating meditation sessions as the sun sets over the Thu Bon River.
These activities feel woven into the natural flow of life at Namia, creating a community of practice that feels both traditional and accessible.
Sustainability as Sacred Practice
Namia’s commitment to environmental responsibility runs deeper than typical eco-initiatives.
They operate with a strict zero-plastic policy, prioritising solar energy and advanced wastewater treatment systems.

The resort uses recycled glass bottled water and has partnered with companies that supply recycled plastic office furniture and sustainable uniform sourcing.
Their “Garden to Table” philosophy sources fresh ingredients locally in Hoi An, and all materials are carefully selected from traditional craft villages, showcasing local artistry while supporting indigenous industries that might otherwise disappear.
The herb garden permeates the entire resort experience, you’ll smell and touch these healing plants everywhere.
Who Will Fall in Love Here
Namia is for travelers who seek luxury without sacrificing authenticity, those who want to be pampered while also being moved.
If you’re someone who values cultural immersion as much as thread counts, who finds wellness in both spa treatments and meaningful connections with local traditions, this is your place.
The resort operates with a refreshingly comprehensive approach to luxury. The daily rate includes accommodation plus an all-day breakfast experience, a 90-minute daily wellness journey, cultural activities, and evening cruises on the river.
The resort shuttle boat connects you to Hoi An’s ancient town in just 10 minutes, yet you might find yourself reluctant to leave the island paradise they’ve created.
A New Standard for Conscious Luxury
Before parting ways, Dien and I settled into comfortable chairs and over glasses of their signature kombucha we discussed what makes this place so extraordinary beyond its obvious beauty.
Three months after my visit, I’m still processing what makes Namia so special.

It’s not just the flawless execution or the stunning location or even the innovative wellness program. It’s how Nam and his team have created a space where Vietnamese culture isn’t just preserved but celebrated, shared, and elevated.
This is what the future of luxury travel should look like, properties that don’t just provide experiences, but facilitate genuine connections with place and culture.
Namia has set a new standard, not just for Vietnamese hospitality, but for what conscious luxury can achieve when it’s rooted in authentic love for homeland and heritage.
I’m already planning my return visit.
